How to trick yourself into selling more

You are REALLY good at what you do, you consistently overdeliver for your clients, but you really struggle to charge for your work or you know you should be charging more.

Does this sound familiar?

The first thing is that there are most likely some underlying money issues that you will need to resolve. BUTTTTTTT, I’ve also come up with a clever jedi-mind-trick to convince you to charge what you’re worth and sell more… here it goes!

Step 1: Choose something that you are really passionate or excited about. This could be:

  • a charity or cause you care deeply about, or

  • your child’s college fund, or

  • the latest rose gold Macbook Air

Don’t overthink this – choose 1 thing!

Step 2: Set up a bank account and give it a name that represents the charity or thing you have chosen. For example, if you want to donate to an environmental cause you could label it ‘for the dolphins’.

Step 3: Decide on a percentage of your revenue that is going to be allocated to that bank account. (this could be 1% or 10% - make sure the percentage makes sense for your business)

Now every time you make money in your business, you put some money into that bank account. Every time you make a sale – your charity (or laptop fund) gets a little bit of it.

This works particularly well if you find it easier to work hard for someone else than sell your own services. You are tricking your brain self into earning and contributing to something bigger than yourself (with the exception of the Macbook Air – but who doesn’t want a beautiful laptop?).

So if you’ve been struggling to charge, or market your business give this a try! See if you can fool your brain into working ‘for someone else’.
